Born in Baddeck, Cape Breton to parents John Nelson Weir and Kathleen Jessie Weir (née Macdonald), and raised in Little Narrows, Lowell was a proud early recipient of homeschooling before continuing studies in a two-room school house and later graduating from Baddeck Academy where he was a model student and sportsman. He attended Acadia University where he excelled academically and romantically – it was here where he first caught the eye of his future wife – and graduated with a BBA in 1974. He began his long and distinguished career by articling to become a Chartered Accountant (CA). He then moved on to a variety of executive and business development positions where his CA designation, intelligence and indelible work ethic enabled him to explore his many interests and talents.
His true passion; however, was his family. Following their marriage in 1976, Lowell and Carol moved to Kentville, where they welcomed their three children. Later relocating to Bedford, Lowell took immense pride in helping his family flourish, taking a particular interest in the kids' sports and becoming actively involved in Bedford Minor Hockey. Perhaps his happiest memories were spent at the family cottage, teaching his children and grandchildren to swim, waterski, and sea-doo. In later years, Lowell took up a number of hobbies, including volunteering with the Atlantic Salmon Federation on conservation efforts, skiing, golf, fishing, travel and horse racing.
While we regret that he was taken too soon, the family is strengthened by the legacy he has left behind. His were lessons of hard work, service to your family and community, and perseverance. Lessons too, of being up for anything, especially the possibility of a good time. And of course, the most important lesson of all, that a story is only as convincing as the person telling it, and the knowledge that the stories he told and tales he wove will truly live forever around the kitchen tables and campfires of his family for generations to come.
He is survived and will be immeasurably missed by his beloved wife of 48 years, Carol; his adoring children: daughter Lauren (Joey Maddalena), granddaughters Jessie, Ruby and Thea of Bedford; son Kyle (Rachel West), granddaughter Olive of Halifax; and son Sam (Lauren), grandsons Austin and Thomas of Bedford; his brothers Nelson, Frank (Peggy) and nephews Craig (Caiti) and Scott; his brother-in-law David Mclaughlin (Mary Jo) and nephew Mark (Tracie); as well as countless cousins, and friends, including his best friend of 65 years, Jim Matheson. He was predeceased by his parents as well as many cousins and friends, including his cousin Peggy MacLeod, with whom he shared a special bond.
The family would like to extend our deepest thanks to the doctors, nurses and care team of unit 5A of the Centennial Building, Victoria General as well as to Dr. Daniel Rayson and Dr. Elaine Davies for their care and commitment over the last few years.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 3rd at 2 p.m. at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to KidSport Nova Scotia to help carry on Lowell’s commitment to youth participation in sport.
