With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Ted (Leonard Samuel) Pennell, who left us on April 25th, 2024, unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in Beaver Bank. Ted was born on May 21st, 1948, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Margaret Myrtle Pennell (nee Smith) and Albert Frank Pennell.
Ted is survived by his devoted friend and former spouse, Dale Wagner (formerly Dale Pennell). Ted and Dale shared a remarkable journey navigating life’s joys and challenges over more than three decades of marriage. Though their paths diverged in 2003 their connection remained. In the past years their relationship evolved into a special friendship, offering each other support and understanding. No longer husband and wife but best friends, and each other's most important person.
Ted is also survived by his children: dedicated son Troy Pennell and cherished daughter Lori Ann Pennell (partner Adam Lamrock), his grandchildren: Falon Peddle (husband Sean Peddle), Austin Pennell (wife Autumn Pennell), and Evan Robitaille, as well as his great grandchildren: Lily and Luca Pennell. His surviving siblings are: Marjorie Wigginton (nee Pennell) (Harold Wigginton), Dianne Martin (nee Pennell, Mosher) (Percy Mosher) (husband Jeff Martin), Skip (Charles) Pennell (Barbara Pennell), Sonny (Fredrick) Pennell, brother-in-law Wayne Duffy, and many nieces and nephews. Ted remained connected with Skip through his regular visits to Nova Scotia, while Marjorie and Diane lovingly stayed in touch with their younger brother through frequent phone calls, keeping him informed and engaged
Ted was sadly predeceased by his parents, Margaret and Albert, his brother Buddy, his sister Renee (Irene) (nee Pennell, McLeod) Duffy, honorary family member Dougie Evans, and fellow Beaver Banker and friend Jim Sampson.
Ted spent his early years in Enfield and later Halifax. As a young man he completed formal training and began more than 35 years as a well-respected painter with Ray Hartlin Painting & Decorating until his retirement in 2017.
Beyond work Ted had been very involved in his community over the years. He was passionate about sports, playing hockey, coaching baseball, cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs and organizing lively games of base runners or badminton in the backyard. He was also an enthusiastic pool and dart player and belonged to the Resolutes Dart Club for many years.
In 1974, Ted moved his family to the home he built in Beaver Bank where he remained living for the rest of his life. He was known for his generous spirit, always welcoming family and friends into his home.
A natural born prankster and generally the life of the party, Ted's presence brought warmth, laughter, and comfort to many. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for his jokes (both good and bad), kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for his family and friends.
As per Ted's insistence, there will be no services to mark his passing, and his ashes will be kept in Beaver Bank. However, family and friends can honor him by sharing stories, warm memories, and condolences through the online guestbook, or amongst each other, possibly even toasting with an Olands.
Donations can be made to the charity of your choice as Ted gave to various organizations and causes.
Ted Pennell's legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, and his memory will forever be cherished.
