Donnie Sweeten, 83, of Greenwood, Arkansas passed away Monday, April 29, 2024 in a Fort Smith hospital. He was born April 18, 1941 in Paris, Arkansas to Kelly and Velda Oletha Sweeten. Donnie was a retired deputy for the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office. After retirement, he was one of Greenwood’s very first School Resource Officers. He attended Excelsior Baptist Church and was an antique car and truck enthusiast.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Ruthie Sweeten; one son, Scott Sweeten of Greenwood; one daughter, Julie Qualls and husband, Alan of Greenwood; two grandchildren, Justin Walters and wife, Cynthia and Nicholas Beam and five great grandchildren, A.J. Walters, Gavin Walters, Kanaan Qualls, Elias Qualls and Wrenley Qualls. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Lonnie Sweeten and Harlin “Skip” Sweeten and a sister, Retha Kay Boggs.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, May 2 at McConnell Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Liberty Cemetery in Greenwood. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 5 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenwood Police Department.
