Porter Dean Wafler, 67, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, February 3. Porter was born in Blytheville, Arkansas. Always a person of service, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at fourteen. Porter attended Blytheville High School before studying engineering at the University of Arkansas. There he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 1982, he moved to Memphis Tennessee to take his first job with the Layne Central Company. In subsequent years, Porter worked for Harbison Walker and Bodine/Philips, where he forged lasting relationships and built a reputation as a dedicated leader in the lighting industry. In 2019, he joined his dear and longtime Bodine friends Al Lyons and John Levesque to form Assurance Emergency Lighting. As East Coast Sales Manager, Porter, a true gentleman, will be remembered for his impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
A devout Christian, Porter loved his savior Jesus Christ in whose arms he now rests. At Independent Presbyterian Church in Memphis and Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church in Greenville, Porter served as an usher, a role he considered an honor and privilege. He loved his Bible and Tuesday morning men’s Bible study at Woodruff Road, especially his “breakfast club” buddies with whom he went for Denver omelets afterwards.
Porter is survived by his cherished wife of forty years, Elizabeth, and precious daughter Olivia, with whom he shared many father-daughter hikes. Liv will miss going on those special hikes with her father.
A worship service for Porter will be held at Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church at 2519 Woodruff Road in Simpsonville from noon to one o’clock on Saturday, February 8.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Woodruff Road Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.
