Born in Greenville, Patsy was the daughter of the late Floyd Allen Thornton and Caroline Still Thornton. She was a graduate of Greenville High School and a retired data analyst for Dunn & Bradstreet. While working in a department store downtown, Patsy met a young police officer, and her future husband, Doug. They would be married nearly sixty years.
Patsy is survived by three children, Rhonda Cannon Richards, Cheryl Miller Boling, and Jay Douglas Cannon; six grandchildren, Austin Miller, Christian Satterfield, Devan Miller, Cody Miller, Cory Miller, and Wells Cannon; two great-grandchildren, Roland Suggs, and James Suggs; sisters Susan Thornton Simms and Lisa Thornton Watkins; brother, Robert Allen Thornton.
Patsy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Doug. Patsy and Doug were long-time members of Berea First Baptist Church. For many years, Patsy enjoyed singing as a shining star in the church’s Living Christmas Tree. In recent months, she and Doug served as greeters. Though age had taken their strength to remain standing, they greeted from chairs always with warm smiles.
Patsy enjoyed many talents. She was a skilled gardener, seamstress, and a wonderful cook. Her sewing machine won many costume contests. Several of her recipes were featured in the cookbook, At My Grandmother’s Table.
Patsy loved to socialize. In years past, she enjoyed acting with Doug in productions at their local theatre. They served many years as election poll workers. Patsy was a doting grandmother. She loved dressing up with the grandkids for Halloween. She took every visit as an opportunity to cook their favorite meals.
In recent times, Patsy and Doug enjoyed simpler things. They were seen daily sitting on their front porch or at Stax Original for a meal. They were always seen holding hands. Sixteen weeks to the day, Patsy went to join her husband, holding hands in heaven, both now in the presence of the Lord.
Service for Patsy will be held on Monday May 6th, at Mackey Funerals and Cremations at Woodlawn, 1 Pine Knoll Dr. Greenville, SC 29609. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
