He was born to Grover (Punch) Julius Gonzenbach and Helen Lawhon Gonzenbach on October 2, 1937, in Taylor, Texas. He grew up in nearby Rice’s Crossing and Taylor, where he graduated High School in 1956. He attended Texas Lutheran College for two semesters before joining the military and completing Basic Training with the 47th Infantry at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1958. In 1960, he transferred to the VIII US Army Corps Reserves for four years and resumed his college studies at the University of Texas in Austin. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1965. He later became a self-employed CPA until he retired.
Don is survived by his beloved wife Wynell Gonzenbach of 24 years, and children, Gary (wife Dawnelle), Lisa (husband George), Greg, and stepson Jason (wife Rachel), twelve grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Don was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, and training hunting dogs. He was known for his great (sometimes sarcastic) sense of humor, devotion to his Texas Longhorns, and his love of country music, especially songs by Wille Nelson.
Don will be buried at a graveside memorial service at 3:00pm on May 30th at the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, 17701 Cameron Road, Pflugerville, Texas 78660.
