Mary Plyter, known lovingly to her family as “Ma” was born to Earl David Daarud and Offie Mae (Voyles) Daarud in North Dakota. She joined Earle’s three sons and daughter from a previous marriage and Offie’s two daughters from a previous marriage as the youngest and only child of their union. Most of her brothers and sisters were either out of the home when she was born or shortly thereafter. Mary grew up with nieces and nephews close to her own age. Soon she started school and at seven began taking piano lessons. She studied the piano diligently and became so proficient in playing she was asked to play during church services. She married Darold L. Wiege in 1963 in Mandan, North Dakota. In 1965 they were blessed with a son. They moved to Lincoln Nebraska and in 1969 they were blessed with a daughter. She spent many years thereafter raising her children and helping to support the family. She and her spouse later divorced. Mary and the children moved to Loveland, Colorado. Shortly thereafter, she married an old flame from her school years. Unfortunately this union did not last long and Mary and the children moved once again but chose to stay in Loveland. Staci (Mary’s daughter) and her high school friend, Sally hatched a plan to get their respective parents together, their fondest wish came true and they became sisters when Mary married David Henry Plyter on March 20, 1987 and Mary also welcomed David’s son sons Philip, Scotty, and Patrick into the new growing family. Mary wore many hats during this time and she was happiest when she was planning the now large family gatherings whether that be backyard barbecues or holiday meals. These events often ended in Mary playing piano while David accompanied her with his beautiful signing voice. The family continued growing and good times were had by all.
In 2008, Mary lost David and her world changed, while not as happy as she had been, she soon became used to the changes in her life. Eight years later, she suffered a series of strokes that left her with vascular dementia. Most days found her living in the 1970’s. For a year, she stayed with her family who did their best to care for her, however soon it was clear that she needed more care than they could provide for her. In April of 2017 she then moved to AppleLeaf Assisted Living in Berthoud. She was happy there and could be coaxed to play the piano again. The staff and other residence were happy to hear her beautiful music. In April of 2023, the vascular dementia began to take its toll and Mary was moved to Lemay Avenue Health and Rehab Facility where they were better equipped to handle her needs. In March of 2024, Hospice was called in. Mary passed peacefully on April 29, 2024.
Mary was preceded in death by both her parents, Earl and Offie; her brothers Richard, Bud, and David; her sisters Margie, Jeanne, and Jackie; and spouse Henry Plyter.
She is survived by her children, Dan & Melissa Wiege, Staci & Mike Lamfers, Phil & Colleen Plyter, Scott Plyter. Sally and Darin Sanders, and Patrick Plyter, sixteen grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.
