Jerome Peyton Shapiro

Jerome Peyton Shapiro, 86, of Burke, Va., passed away on May 1st in Alexandria.
Jerry was born in Washington, DC to Gilbert and Sophie on April 22nd, 1938. He went to school at Georgia Tech. He married Sheila Lotz on April 8th, 1969 in New York. He graduated from University of Maryland.
Jerry joined the U.S. Navy as an officer after attending OCS at Naval Station Newport. He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam conflict and achieved the rank of lieutenant before his honorable discharge in 1967. In the course of his service he received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, ten Air Medals and Navy Commendation Combat “V”.
Following his service, he became a commercial airline pilot with Eastern Airlines, where he met his wife-to-be, Sheila, a flight attendant. During his career at Eastern he rose to the rank of Captain, retiring in 1989.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Sophie and his eldest sister Barbara Goldman.
Jerry is survived by his wife Sheila; their two sons, Michael and Andrew; his Daughter-in-law, Leslie and his sister Marcia.
The family of Mr. Shapiro wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the kind and caring staff at The View Alexandria, the hospital staff at Inova Alexandria and Capital Caring Hospice Service.
Funeral services were held at 2:00pm Sunday, May 5th at King David Memorial Gardens with the Rabbi Jonathan Maltzman of Maryland, officiating. Arrangements are by National Funeral Home.
