It was at a St. Ursula's Chi-Rho event where John met the love of his life, Mary, whom he asked to dance, marking the beginning of a beautiful journey together. His bond with Mary was a shining example of true partnership and devotion. John's love for his family was evident in the joyful gatherings they hosted, complete with laughter, games, Christmas Caroling, and his homemade pizza every Friday. He found joy in simple pleasures like playing Pacman, camping, and playing Pinochle or Cribbage with his loved ones. A devout Roman Catholic, John found solace in his faith and was a faithful attendee of church services.
John devoted 35 years of his life to the Maryland Army National Guard, serving with honor and dedication. He spent many summers drilling with the National Guard, and served several armories in the Maryland area during his long career.
John had a passion for vegetable and flower gardens, which carried over into his culinary skills. He took great joy in cooking for his loved ones, especially his famous "Chief rolls", which were savored by all who tasted them. He believed that recipes were merely “suggestions” and infused each dish with his own unique flair.
In his leisure time, John enjoyed activities like fishing, crabbing, and camping. Family was paramount to him, and he lived his life selflessly, always putting their needs above his own. He took great pride in providing for his family and ensuring they had the opportunities he never had. His generosity knew no bounds, as he often extended a helping hand to those in need, whether it was through a warm meal or essential supplies.
John leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family and community. John is survived by his Devoted Wife of 60 years, Mary Kyran Horner (nee Polk); Loving Chlildren, John Joseph Horner, Jr. (Bridget), Kate Yienger (Ken), and Jean Ashby (Chris); Dear Siblings William Horner and Joseph Horner; Cherished Grandchildren, John “Jay” Joseph Horner, III, Jessica Yienger, Christopher “CJ” Ashby, Jr., Molly Horner Nelson (Michael), and Daniel Yienger.
