Howard was born on November 1, 1927 in Heiskell, Tennessee to Elvin and Sarah Collins. He attended school in Anderson County, Tennessee. At the age of 18 he joined the U.S. Army.
Howard served for 20 years as an infantryman, truckmaster, and driving instructor. While fighting during World War Il and the Korean War, he earned a Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. In addition, he was qualified as an expert marksman. He served honorably and retired at Ft. Bliss.
He then began his new career in El Paso as a Teamster, first as a long haul driver and eventually driving locally. Outside of work he was often found tinkering in the backyard and tending to his backyard oasis. He spent his weekends relaxing with his family. socializing with friends, and participating in his local VFW activities.
Howard is survived by his daughter Teresa (David) Frankenbery, daughter Sandra Collins, and honorary daughter Mary Serna. Howard was the proud Papa to his granddaughters Jessica Ramirez, Samantha (Colin) Cunningham, and Allison Lance. He was most proud of his great grandchildren Leah, Vera, Emory, Scarlett, and Ezra.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria and his son, John. Also preceding him in death were his parents, one sister, and three brothers.
Graveside service will be held at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery East Pavilion at 2:30 on Monday, May 20th, 2024. Attendees are asked to wear colors that represent a colorful garden.
