Georganne Gardella Rexford, 69, a shining light of joy, generosity and elegance, passed away peacefully at her home in Dallas, TX on January 15, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter that touched all who knew her. George, as she was affectionately known, went out on top, passing during what was truly the best period of her life. Over the past seven years she found a renewed vitality alongside improvement in her health and passed away with a heart that was full and content.
The initial responses to her passing demonstrated that Georgewas truly one-of-a-kind, leaving an impact with many she touched during the very different eras of her life. This outpouring of affection has greatly supported her family in beginning their grieving process.
Daughter of Frances Townsend Gardella and Charles John Gardella Sr., Georganne was born on November 29, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan. George was fiercely dedicated to her family. She was the beloved wife of John Rexford (married for 38 years), the loving mother of Charlie (Monika) Rexford, and the adoring grandmother of Audrey and Preston Rexford, all of whom she treasured beyond words. She was a cherished aunt and confidant to Caroline (John) Heitmann, Dana (Paul) Canto, Erin (Chad) Bradshaw, Margaret Gardella, and Charlie Gardella. Her love extended to her great-nieces and nephews: Teddy and Georgia Heitmann, JD and Gwen Canto, and Brooks and Ford Bradshaw. She was the fond sister of Charles (Clare) Gardella and Tom Gardella. She also had a deep love for her loyal canine companions: Buster, Goldie, Sammy, Bella, Luna, and Immi, each one a cherished member of her family.
George had a unique way of making life feel extraordinary. Her love language was giving, and she found immense delight in surprising her loved ones with thoughtful gifts, often turning ordinary moments—like trips to toy and book stores—into magical, Christmas-like celebrations. Each gift at holidays and birthdays were wrapped more beautifully than the next. Her infectious joy at seeing the happiness of others was one of the hallmarks of her life.
George had a knack for making everyone feel at home. She loved hosting her family, whether in Dallas or Michigan, and made sure every visit felt special. Guests could count on fresh flowers in their rooms, luxurious toiletries, a new set of pajamas, and a fridge stocked with their favorite treats. Time with George wouldn’t be complete without lively games—Scattergories “Scatts” before dinner or endless rounds of Mahjong, which always went on until she got a win!
A lover of life’s finer things, George adored fashion, diamonds, designer bags, and shoes, always looking impeccable even when wearing leggings and a sweatshirt. She was a staple at Highland Park Village, indulging in facials, blowouts, dining out and curating a collection of all things classic and beautiful. Yet, she was equally delighted in lending her treasures to her daughter in law and nieces for special occasions, her joy rooted in seeing others shine.
In recent years, George embraced baking, sharing this newfound love with her grandchildren, great nieces and nephews. She balanced her dedication to yoga and Pilates with a refusal to break a sweat—her elegance unwavering even in fitness. Mornings were for coffee and crossword puzzles at the kitchen counter, often while listening to soul or yacht rock music, savoring quiet moments before her days began, adding a gummy into the mix every now and again to spice things up!
From long summers in Harbor Springs, to trips to Austin to visit her grandchildren, George looked forward to enjoying the beautiful life she and John had created together.
George’s memory will live on in the laughter, endless stories, and love shared by her family and friends. She was a gift to us all, and her absence leaves a profound void that will never be filled.
In her honor, let us remember to celebrate life, cherish family and friends, and embrace laughter and joy in every moment, just as George so beautifully did.
There will be a private family memorial service in Harbor Springs, MI. In support of the medical community who were instrumental in supporting George and her family throughout the past several years, the family asks that any memorial donations may be made to the Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation. https://dallasfoundation.bswhealth.com/
