Susan Hill McCord, 76, passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones on Monday, April 29th, 2024 in Rancho Mission Viejo, California. She was the daughter of James Wright and Martha Cochran Hill and was born in Jacksonville, Florida. Susan met John McCord while attending the University of Louisville, and they married in 1968. John was the love of her life, and they remained committed to one another for 56 years.
Susan was a Derby Princess in Louisville during 1968. She taught high school English shortly after graduating from college. Susan was a lifelong volunteer and touched many lives through a strong commitment to philanthropy. Some of the organizations she supported were the Ronald McDonald House, Junior League, Home of the Innocents, United Way, and the Boys and Girls Club.
She was an avid and passionate world traveler, gardener, and took great pride in hosting friends and family for dinners and parties. She loved meeting new people and always made a special effort to remember their names. Susan was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and the Community Church of Vero Beach, Florida.
Susan was deeply loved by her family and many friends. Her commitment to her children’s and grandchildren’s passions was unparalleled. Susan was personable, loving, and had great empathy for others. She cared immensely about traditions and could always pick the right gifts out for those she cherished. Susan never lost her beauty, dignity, grace, and desire to do her very best during the adversity she encountered in her later years.
She is survived by her loving husband John, their daughter Catherine McCord Gordon and her husband Jon, her son John McCord Jr. and his wife Paige, and her grandchildren, Kenya, Chloe, and Gemma Gordon, as well as Sloane and Blake McCord, her children’s in-laws, Sonny and Vivian Gordon and Dale and Martha McGinty. She is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law Cathy Hill, nephew and nieces, Gant Hill, Raleigh Swift, and Susan Stack as well as their families, and finally her grandpups, Cosmo, Cali and Georgia.
The family wishes to thank everyone who cared for Susan during her final years with hope, compassion, and kindness. Susan will be laid to rest at the Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach, California in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Susan's memory may be made to The Ronald McDonald Charity Houses of Kentuckiana.
