Donald Lynn Bishop passed into the arms of his loving Lord Jesus Tuesday, April 29, 2024 at Penrose Hospital, Colorado Springs. He was born to Lola Ray (Frazell) Bishop and Chester Ray Bishop May 6, 1949 at St. Francis Hospital, Colorado Springs.
Don’s early years were spent in his comfortable, cozy home on East Platte Ave. and he enjoyed fun outings with his family and cousin Jo Ann Kirk. They would go to movies at the Chief Theatre, attended the circus, carnivals, rodeos, Sunday afternoon drives, etc.
After graduation, Don, Lola and Jo Ann all volunteered at New Hope of the Rockies, a Nazarene Church outreach to help low income people with food, clothes and furniture. For those hungry for spiritual help, Don offered his counsel and prayers.
Don’s life was rich and abundant with family, many friends from New Hope, Kung Fu lessons, games, movies, delicious home-cooked Sunday meals including many invited guests. Later, he and his mother found good friends in the local Messianic Jewish congregation. Don enjoyed reading throughout his life, and when he became friends with a Catholic Franciscan priest, Bibles and other religious literature appeared on his bookshelves. His 2023 Christmas gifts included a prayer book on the Psalms and beads to help him memorize prayers to Jesus.
Don’s last 12 years were spent at Point of the Pines Assisted Living where Don found many friends among staff, caregivers, and fellow residents. They have shared their memories of Don and inevitably say, “He was a good and kind man.” Don was always ready to generously give out his famous hugs and had a listening ear for the residents’ stories. He then promised to pray for them which he did conscientiously. He set his Apple watch to specific times to do his prayers, and would watch EWTN, following their daily liturgies. Don’s prayers for others were powerful and effective, and during his last year he grew closer to Jesus. He left a message on his hallway door: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3.16)
Don’s life might be summed up in this saying: “Just one life. It will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.” (anonymous). We love you Don and we miss you—from all those whose lives you have touched.
Don is survived by his cousin on his mother’s side, Jo Ann Kirk.
He will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery, Fountain, Colorado near his beloved mother, Lola Mae, his grandmother Gladys Frazell and father, Chester Ray Bishop. There will be no formal services.
Donations can be made in Donald’s name to a church of your choice.
