Beloved husband of Phyllis, (nee Malecke); devoted father of Scott (Cindy), Craig (Jodi), Jamey (Michelle), Aaron (Karen), loving grandfather of Christine (AJ), Amanda (Dylan), Spencer, Ethan, Alyssa, Mikaela, Carson, Cassandra, Leah, Abby, great grandfather of Micah, Marley and Ava; son of the late Phillip and Minnie Appell (nee Kroze).
Mel was a proud dad and poppa to his beloved family. He proudly served in the Army for the 724th maintenance battalion for nearly 4 years before returning to Cleveland to marry his beautiful bride and start a family.
His cherished father was the owner of Phil’s Hardware Store in Cleveland where Mel worked for many years learning skills, he would later use in his own business Mel’s Home Services and Construction. His craftsmanship was superb, and his satisfied customers were abundant. The original Mr. Fixit Man could do anything and everything to a home that was desired, and he passed those skills on to his sons.
As an auxiliary policeman for over 25 years in University Heights and a master builder he had great influence on his son’s careers.
He battled countless ailments throughout his life but never lost his sense of humor. He took great companionship in his dogs throughout his life. He was thankful to his wife, family and the Cleveland VA for caring for him.
He was the hardest worker and toughest survivor. He is now reunited with our beloved Mom, Phyllis. Rest in peace Mom and Dad. Their memories are a blessing to us.
