Born in Union County on March 30, 1930 to Julius Cleveland Baucom and Vergie E. Simpson Baucom, Dorothy graduated from New Salem High School in 1948. Not long after graduation, Dorothy married Augustus Z. High, Jr. Together they would have celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on May 22 this month. They were long time members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Charlotte.
Dorothy was a kind and loving mom who took great care of her family. She loved traveling with A.Z. on cruises to Alaska and European countries including Norway and Russia. They also enjoyed simple drives to the mountains in the fall to collect apples.
Her love for plants was evident to anyone who entered the High home. There was an abundant selection of various species that Dorothy nurtured to full bloom and would then monitor future growth to insure another season of foliage. No trip to a home improvement center or garden center was complete without a purchase of a new foliage addition.
Dorothy had a wonderful fascination with elephants. She would collect various species in a variety of sizes and colors – always insistent that the elephant’s trunk was in the upward position to insure luck. Keychains, jewelry and figurines were a few of the ways Dorothy surrounded herself with elephants. It is said that elephants are symbols of good luck and loyalty.
Left to mourn her loss is her devoted husband A.Z. High, Jr, loving children Donald High of Southport and Phyllis High Pratt of Atlanta; precious grandchildren Brandon High of Stanley and Emily High Weaver (Jonathan) and treasured great grandchildren Ashlynn, Xander and Xavier all of Southport.
Funeral service is scheduled for Monday, May 6, 2024 at noon in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. The family will greet friends starting at 11am. Burial immediately following the service at Sharon Memorial Park.
