David was lovingly adopted by Jesse Raymond Smetts and Mary Johnson Smetts soon after his birth in 1963. He had a fun and normal upbringing until the age of 5, when an unusual medical circumstance resulted in being wheelchair bound for the remainder of his life. He spent much of his early childhood years visiting various hospitals. This, unfortunately, caused him to develop a strong avoidance of doctors and hospitals as he got older.
He found much comfort and fun developing his love for crafts and painting wooden and ceramic items for Christmas and would sell his items and many local church bazaars. He never missed the Southern Living Christmas show in Charlotte. Fishing, was his other love and numerous trips each year to Garden City, South Carolina with his parents and sister Delores to spend the day fishing off the pier.
He was employed as an office administrator doing data entry and payroll for Metro Tech Systems, based in Monroe, North Carolina. A fiercely independent, private man, he lived alone by his own choice and refused any desire to have himself or his mobility van identified as disabled. He loved the company of others, eating out and attending concerts.
Christmas was his favorite time of the year and he would begin playing Christmas music in early October until the end of January. He was very passionate about his favorite teams - the North Carolina Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers. He truly never missed watching a game.
A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
