She was born on April 18, 1930 in Jesup, GA, to Willie David Ammons and Verdie Strickland Ammons. While she was a young child, her family moved to Brunswick where she has lived most of her life. Upon graduating from Glynn Academy in 1948, she went to work for Southern Bell in Brunswick as a switchboard operator. After marrying Harry Driggers on January 21, 1951, Irma worked as a switchboard operator in Mississippi and then in New Mexico while her husband, Harry, was serving in the United States Air Force. Later, Irma helped Harry establish Driggers Construction Company and supported him in his other business endeavors.
Irma was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed being a homemaker and caring for her family. She prepared delicious meals and we knew we could always depend on her love and support. Irma loved the Lord and honored Him with her life. She was a long time active member of Glyndale Baptist Church. She taught children’s Sunday school there in her younger years. Later she was very active in Women’s Sunday school classes and Golden Harvest. When she was no longer able to attend church, she appreciated visits from Pastor Ken Creekmore and his wife, Lisa, Associate Pastor Ben Campbell and other special friends. She enjoyed cooking, reading, walking, studying the Bible, traveling, spending time with her family and friends and tending her plants. She belonged to a ladies walking group for many years where she met many special longtime friends. She also enjoyed listening to gospel and contemporary Christian music. Her favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace” and her favorite contemporary song was “I Can Only Imagine”. Her favorite Bible verse was John 3:16.
