Steve grew up in Baton Rouge, graduating from Istrouma High School in 1970. He attended LSU and then University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL) (now ULL), graduating in 1978. His career as a petroleum geologist and environmental consultant took him from Louisiana to Texas, Woods Hole Massachusetts, Buffalo New York and back to Louisiana until his retirement from the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality in 2012.
Steve was a lifelong outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in south Louisiana, particularly in Leeville and Grand Isle, where he and his family had a camp for many years. Steve was a co-founder, along with his dear friend Bo Blackmon and others, of the Top Pole Rodeo in memory of John Mackler, held annually in Leeville. Following his retirement, Steve and his wife Trixie enjoyed splitting their time between their home in Baton Rouge and their camp in Grand Isle, and spending time with their beloved grandson,Grayson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Trixie Stelly Scarbrough; son, Joel Scarbrough of Pittsfield, Maine; grandson, Grayson Scarbrough of Prairieville, La; brother, Art Scarbrough of Baton Rouge, La; sister, Marion Scarbrough Cronin of Safety Harbor, Fl; sister-in-law, Karla Stelly Schwartz (Steve) of Prairieville, La; brothers-in-law, Stuart Stelly (Julie) of York, Pa, Perry Stelly (Kelly) of Breaux Bridge, La, and Dale Stelly (Theresa) of Walker, La; and numerous nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Harbord and Lucy Scarbrough.
Visitation will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Monday, May 6, 2024 from 9 am until funeral service at 11 am. Burial will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park.
