Obituary of Charles William Callaway
Charles William Callaway ,85, passed away peacefully on April 8th, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. Charles was born on January 17, 1939, to Belvie, Sr and Virginia Callaway in Bassett, Virginia. Charles was baptized at an early age. In his latter years, he attended Lilly of the Valley Church in Bassett, VA. He was joined in Holy matrimony to Sara “Jerri” Callaway for 51 years. Of this union, one daughter was born, Sequoa Callaway. Charles served in the United States Army for 5 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Virginia State College with a major in brick masonry. He was instrumental in the construction of many houses and facilities in the Henry County area. Charles built his home, which consisted of 4 apartments. This was the home of his family and 3 other community tenants. The Callaway apartments were the pillar of Sunset Drive. This was the center of togetherness, laughter, and family for the entire Sunset Community. Many children in the community spent their days at the apartments playing football, kickball, cheering, dancing, singing, sitting on the front porch, and having cookouts every summer. Charles was a true friend to all and welcomed everyone to share the space he called home. The best times on Sunset Drive took place at the Callaway apartments. Charles was a lifetime resident of Bassett VA until his health declined. He then resided in Atlanta, Georgia with his daughter and grandsons. While in Atlanta, Charles loved going to church and spending time with his family. He also attended Skylark Senior Day Center while in Atlanta, Georgia. Charles was predeceased by his parents, Belvie and Virginia Callaway, one brother, Belvie Jr and his beloved wife Sara “Jerri” Callaway. He leaves to cherish his precious memories, a loving and devoted daughter, Ms. Sequoa Callaway of Atlanta Georgia, two loving and devoted grandsons, Hassan Goggins and Xavier Goggins, both of Atlanta, Georgia, a dedicated sister-in-law, Matilda Mullins of Henry, VA, a brother-in-law, Dan Mullins (Millie) of Rocky Mount, VA, nieces nephews, one devoted, Gralon Callaway, cousins and many devoted friends, among them Ricky Woods and Inez Woods of Sunset Drive. A Memorial Graveside Service will be held on May 11th, 2024, at 12 noon at the Hairston Family Cemetery, Sunset Drive, Bassett, VA. with the Rev. Clarence M. Thweatt, Jr, Eulogist officiating. Military Rites will be performed by the Martinsville-Henry County, Veterans Honor Guard.
