Mrs. Barbara Clare Oden, a remarkable soul, sadly passed away on Wednesday evening, Nov. 8. Born Oct. 7, 1943, to parents Charles Edward Smith and Jessie Opal Cox in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Barbara embodied a spirit that resonated with everyone who had the honor of knowing her. As the devoted wife of esteemed University of Texas Professor Dr. John Tinsley Oden, Barbara was a force of nature, exuding traits of loyalty, tradition, and boundless kindness. Her vibrant personality, characterized by her hard work, feisty spirit, and southern charm, left an indelible mark on all she encountered. She was the beating heart and cherished matriarch of our family. Barbara overflowed with love for her family, especially her late son Walker, whose recent passing deeply affected her, and her daughter Elizabeth Lee Hazel, alongside son-in-law Nick. However, the title she cherished most was that of grandmother, fondly known as Baba, to her grandson Tanner. She dedicated herself to imparting wisdom, shaping Tanner into a gentleman, and passing on the values she and Tinsley held dear. She is also survived by her brother Charles E. Smith, as well as many adoring cousins and nephews and nieces.
Among her creative interests, including books, sewing, and Dancing with the Stars, one of her greatest passions over the years was a love and knowledge of antiques — furniture, art, China patterns, silver and most of all, people — that led to a 28-year career in estate sales. She valued people and handled their personal possessions with respect and kindness, no matter the monetary value. She was an active and driven 80-year old woman who found friends wherever she went. She is already greatly missed, but now reunited with her husband and son, whom will no doubt be watching over us for years to come. Rest in Peace, Mom. We love you.
