Penny Hansen of Whitecourt, AB, 98, peacefully passed away on Friday, March 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Penny was born on June 17, 1925, in Willow Bunch, SK.
Penny is survived by her daughters, Lynda (Ron) Ekdahl and Myra (Charles) Egli; grandchildren, Derek Ekdahl, Devin (Bonnie) Ekdahl, Christa Egli and Chad Egli; great-grandchildren, Paige (Brody Bobilek) Ekdahl and Nathan Ekdahl; sister-in-law, Margie Harkness; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by her parents, Herb and Het Harkness; brother, Adry Harkness; sister, Isabell Harkness; first husband, Earl Buckler; second husband, Dan Hansen; and common-law-partner, Kris Knudsen.
Penny was a strong, independent woman who raised and supported her two daughters through good times and bad. Throughout her long life, Penny was a dancer, artist, pianist, farmer, truck driver, camp cook, fisherwoman, hunter, hunting guide, seamstress, hairdresser, bookkeeper, and a fabulous cook and baker. A unique and storied woman, Penny will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Penny’s life was held Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Ross Funeral Chapel, Assiniboia, SK with Interment in the Verwood Cemetery, Verwood, SK. Anette Pryce facilitated the service with a tribute presented by daughters Lynda and Myra. Honorary Pallbearers were Lawson Harkness, Morton Harkness, Melvin Harkness, Beverly Ann Sweeney, Kevin Harkness, Derek Ekdahl, Devin Ekdahl, Christa Egli, Chad Egli, Paige Ekdahl, and Nathan Ekdahl; Urn Bearers were Lynda and Myra. Donations may be made in the name of Penny Hansen to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and the North West Territories Edmonton Regional Office, Allendale Professional Centre, 306, 10430 – 61 Avenue, Edmonton AB T6H 2J3
