Marilyn Diane Hill was born in Wilkie, Saskatchewan, in December of 1933, eldest child of Dr. V. R. Hill and (Ethel) Merle McCalmon Hill. She was raised in the United Church, educated in McClurg School, sang in the choir, was active in CGIT, played the piano, read books, played baseball, curled, golfed, and loved to swim. She earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta. Her sister, Sharon Gay (Hill) Card, became a nursing professor at UBC’s Kelowna campus. Her brother, Dr. Byron Wayne McCalmon Hill, lived in Henderson, Kentucky, USA.
After university, Marilyn taught school before marrying Allan James Forbes, a professional engineer, and they made their home in Edmonton. They had three children, Diane Jean Forbes Hennig, (Glenn), James Brian Forbes, and Gordon Rowland Forbes. After a few years at home, Marilyn continued to teach school and was active in the Professional Engineers Wives Club, hosted a bridge club, curled, golfed and was actively engaged raising her 3 children. Marilyn and Allan moved to BC for a few years, then retired to Edmonton, in 1995. Marilyn had a love of dogs and enjoyed the company of several during her long life.
Marilyn is survived by her sons Jim and Gordon; daughter Diane, granddaughter Jennifer Salyers, (Chris) great grandchildren Cameron, & David Salyers; granddaughter Glynnis Penny, (Scott); and granddaughter Heather Hennig; nephew Brandon Hill (Maggie), and sister Sharon. She was predeceased by her husband Allan, brother Byron, sister-in-law Jean and her husband Lewis Smith, brother-in-law, Ken Card, and son-in-law, Glenn.
Marilyn had a long and fruitful 90 years of life, and will be remembered by her family & friends with great love & fondness.
A small family service of remembrance will be held at a later date.
